8/1-8/2 - Crosley Field
GAME 1 - Reds 5, Phillies 1
Joey Jay cruised through this contest allowing just one solo run in the top of the 7th. Wally Post and Gordy Coleman each went deep as the Reds torched Art Mahaffey and his understudy Lehman for 12 hits and 5 runs in this one sided contest.
GAME 2 - Reds 7, Phillies 5
Neither starter (O'Toole or Buzhardt) had much to offer as evidenced by the 5 runs that each ceded. Philly scored all of their runs in a blowout 5 run third inning, but their lack of pitching could not hold the 5-3 lead. A Vada Pinson solo shot in the 7th tied the game at five. A two run shot with 2 outs in the 9th provided a walk off win for Jim Brosnam, who threw two spotless innings in relief.
8/4 - Connie Mack Stadium
GAME 3 - Reds 4, Phillies 3
Bob Purkey struggled through 7 2/3 innings of 3 run ball, but he battled through like a cagey vet. Philly actually had a 3-2 lead going into the 4th when Cincy posted 2 runs to take the lead. Leo Cardenas scored on a ground out thanks to an error by Wes Covington that allow Leo to get to second on a single. Elio Chacon also scored on a ground out. Frank Robinson hit a solo shot in the 3rd. Once again Jim Brosnan came to the rescue to get the final 2 outs as Philly was threatening in the home half of the 9th. Philly had runners on 1st and 2nd, after Covington narrowly missed a homer that Pinson tracked down on the warning track. Pinch hitter Ruben Amaro lined a one hopper to Gene Freese at third to start the 5-4-3 DP that ended the game and clinched the sweep for the #1 seeded Reds.
