Tigers sweep expansion Halos in 3 straight

Tuesday august 1, Tiger stadium

Rocky_Colavito_DET The Tigers got a run in each on the first three innings, each run scoring on a sacrifice fly.  They got another run in the 4th on another fly ball.  But this fly ball was hit by Rocky Colavito and landed in the left field seats.  The Angels got one back in the 6th on a single by Earl Averill but Colavito quickly got that back by hitting his second homer of the game.  In the 7th Ken Hunt doubled home pinchhitter Leon Wagner who had singled.  Charley "Paw Paw" Maxwell batted for starter Jim Bunning in the 8th with two on and none out and closed out the game by stroking a homerun into the right field seats.  The Angels added two runs in the 9th but it wasn't nearly enough.  Jim Bunning got the win and Tom Bowsfield took the loss   Tigers 8  Angels 4

Wednesday August 2 Tiger Stadium

Chico Fernandez opened the scoring in the second, stroking a homerun.  LeeFrank_Lary_DET Thomas gave the Angels the lead in the 4th homering with Ken Hunt on base.  The game stayed that way until the 7th when the Tigers tied it on a walk to lead off pinchhitter Charley Maxwell, a Frank Lary single and a Jake Woods single. The Tigers took the lead in the 8th when Colavito led off with a double.  Steve Boros walked and Fernandez forced Boros at second.  Dick Brown flied deep to right to allow Colavito to bring home the winning run.  Lary went the distance for the win.  Johnny James took the loss   Tigers 3  Angels 2

Friday August 4 Wrigley Field-LA

Al_Kaline_DET The Angels opened the scoring in te second when Steve Bilko crushed a Don Mossi offering deep into the left field stands.  But the Tigers came back in the third with power of their own.  Al Kaline hit a two run homer and was followed by Norm Cash's first hit of the series, also a homerun.  Steve Bilko obviously wanted to keep playing and show up the team that had not protected him during the expansion draft as he singled in the fifth to drive home Albie Pearson and close the gap to one.  It was as close as the Angels would get however.  Kaline opened the 8th with his second homerun of the game and after Cash walked, Colavito hit his third of the series.  Billy Bruton added a homerun of his own in the ninth.  Mossi went the distance for the win while Ken McBride took the loss.  Tigers 8  Angels 2
