8/1/63 - Memorial Stadium
GAME 1 - BAL 4, CLE 2
Mudcat Grant vs Robin Roberts
The venerable Robin Roberts showed flashes of brilliance dating back to his hey day in Philly by going 8 and fanning 5 with out allowing a walk. Cleveland actually carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 6th when back to back RBI singles by Jackie Brandt and rookie left fielder John Wesley Powell tied the game up at 2-2. An RBI single by Al Smith in the bottom of the 8th put the O's up by one. Tito Francona mishandled Powell's sinking liner to left, which allowed Smith to score an important tack on run. The diminutive Stu Miller would relieve Roberts and toss a perfect 9th inning to save the game.
Orioles lead series 1-0
8/2/63 - GAME 2 - Indians 2, Orioles 0
Dick Donovan vs Steve Barber
The Tribe final broke a scoreless deadlock courtesy of a Max Alvis roundtripper. Mike de la Hoz' RBI single in the 8th increased the Tribe's margin to 2. Dick Donovan left after 7 shutout innings and gave way to Ted Abernathy, who pitched the final two scoreless frames. Both teams would post 6 hits, but the Tribe found a way to make their count. Alvis would go 2 for 3 with an RBI to pace Cleveland's offense on a day that belonged to the arms.
Series tied 1-1
8/4/63 - Cleveland Municipal Stadium
GAME 3 - Orioles 5, Indians 4
Milt Pappas vs Jack Kralick
Bob Johnson's RBI single for the O's in the top of the 7th tied the game up at 4, which is where it stood after regulation frames. Neither team would score in the 10th. Cleveland reliever Ted Abernathy would get the first 2 outs in the top of the 11th, but he would not be able to record the all important third out. Reliever Stu Miller was allowed to bat for himself with 2 outs and hit a bullet off the centerfield fence for a double. A wild pitch by Abernathy allowed Miller to advance to third and a clean single by Bob Johnson would deliver him home for the go ahead run. Miller would allow just a walk to Willie Tasby as he closed out the 11th to give the O's the game.
Orioles lead series 2-1
8/5/63 - GAME 4 - Orioles 6, Indians 3
Robin Roberts vs Pedro Ramos
Once again the veteran Roberts was able to limit the damage and survive 8 innings where he gave up 10 hits, but just 3 runs while fanning 5. Pete Ramos had nothing for the Tribe and couldn't even gut his way through 6 innings (5 runs). Russ Snyder would go 3 for 5 for the O's with 2 runs scored and a RBI. Young John Wesley Powell would have a 2 for 4 day with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored thanks to a 2 run homer he hit in the 5th. Stu Miller pitched a perfect 9th for his second save of the series. Cleveland wasted a 3 for 5 day by leadoff man Vic Davalillo, who only managed to score once.
Orioles win series 3-1
